Abstract: Because online reviews influence customers' buying choices in a significant way, e-commerce platforms are deliberately using review systems to gain a competitive edge over their competitors. The strategic potential, on the other hand, can only be realized if the review system is established in an acceptable manner. There has not yet been a comprehensive review article that summarizes and synthesizes the research on the design of review systems and the consequences of design decisions. By offering a scoping review, we want to bridge the gap between the two parties. For the purposes of this synthesis, we propose that the design of review systems moderates both the effect of online reviews on economic outcomes and the variables that influence how and when reviews are generated. Following a review of existing research results, we identify research gaps and propose a study agenda that focuses on three important themes: design elements, surroundings, and devices (or devices themselves).
